Critérium du Dauphiné: Tom Geoghegan Heart Stage 7 Non-Starter as Mask Crash Fallout continues

Lidl-Trek has confirmed that Britain's Tao Geoghegan Hart has abandoned the Critérium du Dauphiné as a result of his injuries in the late Stage 5 mass crash.

Geoghegan Hart was able to complete the first Alpine stage on Friday, but sat down as soon as the last climb, Le Collet D'Allevard, began. He completed the race on this day in 116th place.

According to a short message issued by Lidl-Trek late on Friday night, the 2020 Giro d'Italia winner said: "I'm feeling pain from the back of the Stage 5 crash today and I'm not 100% feeling it.

Geoghegan Hart is one of the 1600 riders who did not start the Stage 7 ultra-mountainous stage to Summons 8 on Saturday 1. Logan Curry (Lotto-Dstny) also did not start Saturday due to injuries caused by a mass crash in Stage 5, and Hugo Tumile (Cofidis) did not start as a combination of illness and injury that followed Thursday. Others who did not start were Anders Skaarseth (Uno-X Mobility), Clement Russo (Groupama-FDJ), Christophe Juul Jensen and Blake Quick (both Jayco-AIUIa) and Abner Umba (Astana・Kazakhstan). "I was modulating my speed very well and I saw the guy in front of me slip and fall,"Geoghegan Hart told reporters Friday morning about his crash experience and injuries

"I was finding some space right, in an ideal world to aim for the grass or stop. They hit me from behind, probably trying not to brake and I went flying to the electric pylon.

"So I have a zero cut, which is positive, but I hit the pylon at 45kmh. Even if you do not have a fracture, the ribs are always quite complicated, because you can suffer a lot with breathing and stuff.

As the race heads to last weekend, Primoš Logric (Bora・Hansgrohe) is the overall leader of the Criterium du Dauphine. The Slovenian also fell into a crash, but can continue despite hurting his waist and left elbow, win the summit finish stage on Friday

"It's a little better, I don't know how long it takes to be very good, but we have to focus on the stage, especially in the end." The start will be important," Rogic told reporters on Saturday morning.

Another rider who finished the race right after Stage 7 began was Soudal-QuickStep all-rounder Ilan van Wilder.
