"I tried, but this climb was so difficult" - Marc Sorrell caught in the last kilometer of the Dauphine Queen Stage

Marc Sorrell came to the bottom of the final climb of the Queen stage of the Criterium du Dauphine, in the gap between the Peloton and 4:20 to take a solo victory from the breakaway, the last feat achieved by the UAE team Emirates rider in the 2022 Vuelta a Espana.

But what stood between the Spaniard and the finish line was the last 9km hose category ascent of the Samons 1600 with an average gradient of 10%, as well as the yellow jersey's Primowroglich and his Bora Hansgrohe team.

After controlling the gap to breakaway in most of the 155.3km Stage 7, Rogic's teammates increased the pace to dispatch riders from their backs on a brutal climb.

The suffering Soler saw his lead disappear, and on the way he began to look behind him, until he was finally caught up in going 2km. As he advanced to the top where Rogic won, he could only watch him ride in the group he chose.

The Spaniard wanted his deficit of 3:45 in the general classification to provide him with enough buffer, but it was not. He finally crossed the line in 11th place, 3:15 behind the winner.

"I'm happy that the conditions are good. I tried, but this climb was very difficult and very steep," Soler told CyclingProNet and other media at the finish. "I was so far away from GC that I wanted to try it. We take time, but here this climb is too difficult to do anything.

Soler was the key to igniting the day's detachment when he fled with 20 riders after 2km of action.

By that time, the break had culminated in the first category Cordesaisi, 33km to the stage, and they had a lead of 2:50 in the Peloton. Sorrell, whose gap had increased to more than a quarter as they went beyond the Court Dalash, makes a virtual leader on the road.

The next first category climb of the Col de la Ramaz made its sacrifice to the fugitives, and they began to attack each other. Soler countered an attack from Warren Bergill (dsm-firmenech PostNL) and continued solo, extending the lead to 5-28 to 37 kilometers.

Soler lost time downhill, and a mullet-led peloton chased him hard in the valley before the last ascent of the day. The lead group was down to about 10 riders by the time they caught Soler.

When asked if he noticed the damage Chase had done, Soler simply said, "I want to try and people follow, but I needed to get here [with] a lot of time.""

With one stage to go and the third mountain top finish in three days, Sorrell sat down at 7:07 from Roglić and he fled for another chance to glory

"Tomorrow [Sunday] we will have another opportunity. Then we will try if the legs are ok.

Sorrell said the Tour de France UAE team Emirates lineup

"The tour is difficult because Tadej is in very good shape and needs to do a lot of work, because the leader Tadej Poganyar has targeted the historic Giro Tour double on May 7." It will be nice. Then I want to finish the Dauphine in good condition, and we will see.”
