Wilier said that when Cyclingnews tested the new Supersonica SLR time trial bike at a wind speed of 50km/h at the Silverstone Sports Engineering Hub wind tunnel, where the aero-road wheels and road helmets were tested, the new Supersonica SLR time trial bike was faster than the previous time trial bike, Turbine. It claims to have been 16 percent Aero.
The new bike was developed with Swiss time trial champion Stefan Küng from the Groupama-FDJ professional team. The entire project was completed in just 50 months, including more than 30 hours of CFD computer simulation, 3D printed mock-ups testing in a wind tunnel and 2 prototypes production.9 The Supersonica SLR is also available on the Tissot Velodrome in Switzerland and on roads in Belgium.
This is the first bike Wilier has developed with Groupama-FDJ since taking over from Lapierre as the team's bike sponsor, but it is clear that the bike provider's changes to the team had taken place long before the official announcement in 2023/12. Wilier also supplies bikes to Astana-Qazaqstan from 2020.
Developments from the turbine will include an updated shape, greater rigidity and an updated bar design, Wilier says. No raw data will be provided to back up Aero's claims.
Non-professional riders can customize the extension to their measurements in the same way as professionals, and Willier offers a service based on optical scanning of the rider's forearm. They can then choose between carbon or 3D printed titanium extensions. The frame is also compatible with profile design aerobars.
Other features of the new bike include an integrated seat mast with adjustable saddle rails, 28mm tire clearance, a removable front mechanical hanger and a bayonet style fork mount with 1 1/8in bearings and an anti-rotation system. The frame is uci Legal.
The Wilier Supersonica SLR can be purchased as a frame kit for a price of 9,000 euros. The Dura-Ace build with a tri-spoke front with Miche Lenticular disc rear wheels and profile design ACS PRO extension is priced at €20,500. Add a custom extension and the price is €27,400.
At the moment, only the size L/XL is available because this bike is made to fit Küng, but Wilier promises that in early 2025 another 2 sizes, XS/S and M, will be available.
The first outing of the bike is planned for today's opening stage 4.8km time trial at the Tour de Switzerland.
