The Tour de Switzerland remembers Gino Medel with a special mountain rise and a commemorative ride

A year after Gino Maydale's tragic death at the Tour de Switzerland, race organizers will create a memorial ride and present the special King of the Mountain Award for his honor during this year's race.

The commemorative riders will start at noon on the 16th, ahead of the close Mountain time trial of the race from the UCI World Cycling Centre in Egle to Villar-sur-Olon. The ride follows the route of Stage 8 and features an altitude of 865 meters.

"Together, we remember Gino Medel and ride the picturesque climb of Stage 8 of the Tour de Switzerland," the Tour de Switzerland organizers announced.

"This special commemorative ride brings us together to master the challenging route of the community and the spirit of sport." to."

The ride has a 9-month registration deadline, costs 75CHF, and the red Q36.5Gino Mäder memorial jersey is also included in the price.

The Tour de Switzerland supports the #RideForGino Foundation, established in honor of Mäder, and the hashtag will appear on the jerseys of all leaders in the race.

The race number 44 that Mäder wore in last year's race will also be excluded from the race in the future, Tour de Switzerland coach Olivier Seng confirmed.

"We will no longer award Gino's number 44 that he was wearing when he crashed," Senn said in an interview with Gruppetto magazine, adding that the race would not hold a moment of silence for Mäder.

"Of course, it was an idea that came to us as well. But when talking to the family, it quickly became clear that they did not want it. Of course, we respect it.

"We have been in close contact for the past 11 months, but it was clear that the family would not do anything they didn't want. So, we now want to bring the beautiful and positive side of Gino Mäder to the fore.

This year's race will also honor Mäder's memory with a new mountain award, as will Giro d'Italia's Cima Coppi and Tour de France's souvenir Henri Desgrange.

The prize, named #RideForGino Mountain Prize, will be awarded to the first rider on Stage 6 of the race, on the 2,421-meter-high Nufenen Pass, the highest point of the race.

"One of Gino's great strengths was the high mountains," Sen told Brick.1

"That's why we, together with Gino's family, decided to dedicate the highest point of the race to him. In this way, Gino will remain forever connected to the Tour de Switzerland."
