Lorena Wiebes will be the only leader of the powerful Dutch team in the Elite Women's race to be held at the Paris Olympics on 8/4.
National Coach Loes Gunnewijk confirmed the decision to appoint Wiebes as team leader in an interview with Nos, but said the choice of 4 riders would offer options for different race scenarios.
"Lorena will be the leader. We have several irons in the fire. The competition will struggle with this group," Gunnewijk said.
The Dutch team announced the Elite women's team earlier this week, including Tour de France champion Demi Volling, former multi-time world champion and Olympic champion Marianne Voss and three-time trial world champion Eleanor Wasser. It also includes Van Dijk.
Vollering and Van Dijk will also compete in the 7/27 individual time trial.
"It was not an easy choice," Gunnewijk said. "The level of Dutch riders is high. Based on the course, we have developed different scenarios. We looked at the possible course of the race, the time trial and the necessary skills. These 4 names belong to it.
The Elite Women's Road Race is a 158km event that starts and ends at the Eiffel Tower in Pondiena, between the tower and the Trocadero Gardens. The women will race a larger loop of 110km and return to complete the 18.4km circuit 2 laps.
This course is compared to the course of the Flanders tour in terms of challenging, short and sharp climbs along the 1-day classic-type route.
Gunnewijk said it was not the only determinant that would determine who would race for the Dutch team; other factors included the rider's strengths, personality and how well he fit as a team.
She said Longlist also attended a kind of training camp focused on team building practice.
"We organized Team Days for this purpose and conducted a personality analysis," she said. "We saw how they could best use each other's qualities and how they could strengthen each other in this respect."
