As Elisa Balsamo continues to recover from injuries sustained in the high-speed crash at La Vuelta A Burgos Féminas two weeks ago, it is unclear when she will be able to return to the race, but confirmed that the worst is over.
The former world champion entered this season with goals in both road racing and track events at the Olympics and said she still wants to join the Italian national team at these events in late May 7 and early May 8.
"At the moment, I can't make any predictions about my return. The Olympic dream is still there and it is burning stronger than before. But now, unfortunately, I have more hope than certainty," Balsamo wrote on Instagram on Thursday.
Balsamo and her compatriot Sofia Bertizzolo were involved in a serious crash during the final sprint of the Stage 5-16 at La Vuelta a Burgos Feminas on June 1. Both riders were hospitalized for injuries.
A medical update from Lidl-Trek confirmed that Balsamo suffered fractures to the nasal and 2nd metacarpal bones while maintaining a concussion, and both injuries require surgery.
This is the 2nd consecutive year that Balsamo has faced a long recovery from injuries suffered during the race. Last year, on May 5, she crashed in RideLondon, with her injuries including fractures to her jaw and wrist.
Balsamo posted an Instagram message about her experience on Thursday thanking her supporters for their kind messages and expressing how difficult her recovery process has been.
"I introduced this post with great gratitude to everyone who wrote to me, showed me your love and sent their best wishes. It was a difficult 2 weeks, I do not deny it. A roller coaster of emotions. From fear to sadness, from anger to hope," she wrote.
"The only constant was the determination to stand up again. It takes time, patience and sacrifice. But thanks to the help of extraordinary people and the affection I feel around me, I know I can do it.
"At the moment, I can't make any predictions about my return. The Olympic dream is still there and it is burning stronger than before. But now, unfortunately, I have more hope than certainty.
"I live a recovery-focused present. The worst is over, and now I'm turning disappointment and anger into strength. Once again, thank you all. We will speak soon, I promise!"
