With the Giro d'Italia winning in the rear-view mirror and Tadeji Pogagnard switching focus on his third victory in the Tour de France, UAE Team Emirates team Manet
The Danish 2-time tour winner suffered a lung injury to him after a major crash on the Basque tour on May 4. And after leaving a few fractures, is on the way to recovery.
Matxin looked back at the 2023 season when Pogañar broke his wrist in liege-Bastogne-Liege and experienced a serious spring crash.
"That Vingegaard crashed heavily on a tour of the Basque country"Last year, Tadej crashed after 3 weeks and was in Vingegaard's slipstream until the tour time trial (Stage 16), Matxin reported by Sporza.
"Vingegaard has been training at altitude for weeks, he's a big favorite," he added.
The Spaniard seemed keen to remove the pressure from Poganyal during the double attempts of his historic Giro Tour, noting the energy the Slovenians spent during his victory in Italy.
"Of course Tadeji was also tired after the giro...There were days when Tadeji burned 8,000 calories, his wattage was also very high.
Pogagnard won the race about 10 minutes ahead of Bora Hansgrohe's Daniel Martinez, but Matosin tactically assured that the Italian's aim was to race as "economically" as possible with one eye on May 7.
"He never pulled off an 80km solo like he did at Strade Bianche. And Tadej didn't have to fight for his position at the Peloton thanks to the perfect work of his teammates," Matxin said.
Having defeated Pogagnard in the last two Tour de France, Vingegaard is the opponent that UAE team Emirates seems most concerned about, but Matxin also beat Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-Quick-Step), Primoz Roglic and Alexandr Vlasov (both Bora-Hansgrohe) in the Tour de France. It was named as the main favorite of the service.
All 3 of them are scheduled to compete in the Critérium du Dauphiné as preparation for the tour, and Evenepoel and Roglic, after falling victim to the same crash as Vingegaard on May 4, on their own comeback trail, during which Pogagnard heads to an altitude camp in the French Alps to tweak his form. I'm going to take a break before I get to work.
Vingegaard has already trained at altitude, but is not on the starting line to race the Dauphine. Visma-Lease A Bike takes a flexible and conservative approach to the recovery of the Tour de France champion.
Vingegaard's coach, Tim Heemskerk, told the radio cycling podcast, "Plans for the next 4 weeks will be determined in a daily process. What he is doing today will be tomorrow's training. If we see him improving, he can do a little more tomorrow, of course respecting the recovery. We are not forcing anything.
If Taday Pougagnard wins the Tour de France in 7 weeks time, he will be the first rider to complete a Giro tour double since Marco Pantani in 1998.
The World Championship held in Switzerland later in the season is another big ambition of Pogagnard, and a bit for a rider with a seemingly endless appetite to win the temptation would certainly be too much to prevent him from going for the treble of an unprecedented grand tour. No rider has won the Giro d'Italia, Tour de France or Vuelta a Espana in the same season.
This achievement would stave off everything that preceded it in Poganyar's illustrious career so far, but Matxin denied that possibility.
"Winning 3 grand tours in the same year is great for history books, but not this year...The Vuelta is the schedule of Poganyal"
