Former unbound champion Ivar Slik injured in collision during training ride in Arkansas

2022Unbound Gravel200 champion Ivar Slik was taken to hospital in Fayetteville, Arkansas on Tuesday after crashing into a car during training in nearby Bentonville.

At the time, Dutch cyclists Thijs Zonneveld, Nikki Terpstra and Jasper Ockeloen were riding with Slik. Zonneveld, in collaboration with Ockeloen and Terpstra, posted on Instagram that Slik is "doing well under the circumstances" after a diagnosis by doctors at the Washington Regional Hospital confirmed "severe concussion, broken nose, cuts and bruises."

"Yesterday, our friend Ivar Slik crashed into a car during a training ride around Bentonville, Arkansas. He lost consciousness and was taken to hospital, where he was diagnosed with severe concussion, a broken nose, lacerations to the skull, and many bruises.

"He's doing well right now, given the situation. The doctor is hopeful, he is awake, he speaks and moves his whole body. The next day he will be staying in the hospital for him to be closely monitored. We are very happy with the help he has gotten and given," Zonneveld wrote in social, working with his 2 friends.

In an update to Cyclingnews on Thursday afternoon, Zonneveld said, "He is stable and awake but has been carefully monitored for head injuries."

Slik was with 3 fellow Dutch cyclists, Zonneveld, Nikki Terpstra and Jasper Ockeloen, when they were in northwest Arkansas, at 6-1 in Emporia, Kansas.

The group of riders is part of a large contingent of Dutch who competed recently at Gravel Locos in Texas on 5/18, Slik, Terpstra, Ockeloen top 5, Zonneveld17

Slik became the first European to win the Elite men's 200 mile gravel race in Kansas. He was a European-based rider, doing so two years ago ahead of a four-rider sprint at the finish followed by fellow Dutchman Laurens ten Dan after US riders Keegan Swenson and Ian Boswell.

Cyclingnews has reached out to Slik representatives for an official update on his condition and is awaiting a response. Dutch media, including Wielerflits and NHSport, also reported the incident, but no further details were given.
