Under low-hanging clouds and slippery rain on the road surface, the second stage of La Vuelta Femenina saw two riders crash in the last kilometer. Marianne Bos (Visma-Ries-A-Bike) was unhurt, but missed a chance to sprint for the win.
Allison Jackson (EF Education Cannondale) won the stage, finishing ahead of new race leader Blanca Vas (SD Walks Pro Time) and third-place finisher Carline Swinkels (UAE Team ADQ).
The first crash occurred just a few meters before the 3km mark, with Mischa Bredewald and Niamh Fischer-Black (both SD Works-Protime), Eline Janssen (Volker Vessels), and Lizzie Deignan (Lidl Trek), Clara Emon (EF Education-Cannondale), and Voss and her teammate Anna Henderson were involved.
Voss quickly got back on her bike, but was unable to return to the front of the race, eventually finishing in 27th place. Teammate Henderson was hit harder as Emond crashed on top of her. Henderson got back up, but was only listed on the results sheet due to the 3km rule and was unable to complete the stage.
Henderson underwent a full examination at the hospital. On Tuesday morning, the team announced that Henderson had broken his collarbone and would not start stage 3. Similarly, Emon also missed the race with a broken elbow.
Riedl-Trek confirmed to Cycling News that Degnan only felt pain after the crash and has already joined the team's injured list, which includes Ellen van Dijk and Elinor Beckstedt, who crashed in the team time trial on stage 1 confirmed. Elisa Longo Borghini crashed early in the stage but was uninjured.
Just a few hundred meters up the road, Magdalene Valliere's (EF Education-Cannondale) bike slipped on a roundabout, and Emma Norsgaard, Rian Lippert, and Mareille Mayerling (all Movistar team), Georgia Baker and Tenniel Campbell (both Rib Arla Jayco), and Mieke Dox (Lotto Dos Tony Ladies) fell. Maude Reinbeek (AG Insurance-Soudal) was also unable to avoid crashing and somersaulted over the crash barrier.
Fortunately, Reinebæk was not seriously injured and was able to finish the stage. Norsgaard was assisted by a teammate to get up and, according to Cycling News from the team, suffered a cut on his elbow that required stitches and a few bruises, but was otherwise fine. Lippert also suffered minor bruising, but Meyering (who had already fallen on the descent of Puerto de Loronet) was fine.
Liv Arulla-Jacco confirmed that Baker and Campbell felt pain after the crash but had no further injuries. Volker Vessel confirmed that Janssen, who was involved in the first major pileup, suffered a small cut on his knee but was otherwise unharmed.
