Bora-Hansgrohe announced that Leonard Kemna has been released from a Tenerife hospital about a month after being hit by a driver while riding during the team's high-altitude training camp.
The German, who was preparing for his third appearance in the Giro d'Italia, which begins this weekend in Piedmont, was struck and seriously injured Wednesday, April 3.
According to the team, Kemna was the only member of the Bora-Hansgrohe team involved in the accident, as "an oncoming driver turned left into [his] lane and struck [him]. He sustained numerous injuries, including to his chest, and was taken to a local intensive care unit where he underwent surgery last week.
Beulah Hansgrohe announced that Khemna will be flown to Hamburg today and then treated by the team's medical department.
"Thank you for all the support over the past weeks. I especially want to thank my girlfriend and my family. [Life at the University Hospital in Tenerife has not been easy, but I am very grateful for all that the medical team and nurses have done for me over the past weeks.
"Today I am overjoyed that the first phase of my recovery is complete and that I can head to Hamburg: I am very eager to start rehabilitation there and get back on the bike as soon as possible. He is very motivated to start rehab there and get back on the bike as soon as possible.
The German team has yet to announce whether Kemna will return to racing. He was scheduled to lead the team in the Giro d'Italia after a top-10 finish in Tirreno-Adriatico earlier in the season.
Kemna has raced the Giro twice in his career, winning the fourth stage to Mount Etna in 2022 and finishing ninth overall last May.
In his place, Dani Martinez leads Bora-Hansgrohe, while Tour de Suisse breakthrough star Florian Lipowitz is another rider to watch in the high mountains. Dani van Poppel will be the team's sprint leader after Australian fastman Sam Welsford was omitted from the eight-man selection.
