The 27-year-old won the Tour four years ago and is looking to return to top form after suffering an early-season training accident in 2022.
He returned to Grand Tour racing last year at the Tour and Vuelta a EspaƱa, and this spring he is in his best form since the accident with seven top-10 finishes in eight races, including podiums at O Gran Camino and Volta a Catalunya.
On Instagram, Bernal announced his participation in the Tour.
"Finishing the first half of the season with a blessing. I am now in Colombia for a few days preparing for a good Tour de France," Bernal wrote, without saying which race he would participate in.
Bernal's schedule for the remainder of the 2024 season was unknown, but his top results in 34 days of racing this spring have convinced the upper management of Ineos Grenadier that he can compete at a high level again this July.
His most recent victory came just three years ago at the Giro d'Italia, when he took his second Grand Tour win.
He finished third in the Colombian championship road race and second in the final mountain stage of the Volta a Catalunya (57 seconds behind Tadei Pogachar). He also made a significant contribution to Carlos Rodriguez's overall victory at the Tour de Romandie.
Ineos Grenadiers also brings 2018 race winner Geraint Thomas to the Tour. However, he fell in both of his first attempts in 2017.
Carlos Rodriguez, who finished fifth overall in Paris last July, is also set to race for the British team, while 2022 L'Alpe d'Huez stage winner Tom Pidcock heads to his third career Tour.
