La Vuelta Femenina GC standings: winners and losers after the fourth stage echelon

SD Walks Pro Time is the team that formed the echelon early in La Vuelta Femenina stage 4: The Dutch team's two GC riders, Demi Vollering and Niamh Fischer-Black, were one of seven GC contenders to join the lead group and eventually nearly two minutes ahead of the rest of the field. The remainder of the race will effectively be two GC races: one for the overall win and one for the lower top 10.

Stage winner Kristen Faulkner (EF Education-Cannondale) has moved up the overall standings significantly, as she gained 10 seconds at the finish and an equal number of bonus seconds; the 31-year-old Alaskan native is currently in third place overall and the new red jersey of She is nine seconds behind Marianne Vos (Visma Lease-a-Bike) in the new red jersey.

Elisa Longo Borghini (Riddle Trek) held on to fourth place, 18 seconds behind Voss and her own GC hopes, but her team co-leader Gaia Lealini was in the pack that finished 2:01 behind Faulkner and 2:11 back in 18th place She dropped down the order. As a result, Lealini may be free to pursue a stage win, but her hopes of a GC podium finish are, by all accounts, dead.

Vos' teammate Liejeanne Marx also holds sixth place overall, 20 seconds back, followed by Vollering and Fischer-Black, 21 seconds back. SD Volks Pro Time is currently the only team with two riders still in contention for the overall win, giving them an advantage over their rivals.

Kasia Niewiadoma (Canyon-SRAM) held the same time as Vollering, Fischer-Black, and Marcus, but was 28 seconds behind Voss in the top 10. However, her two teammates, Ricarda Bauernfind and Antonia Niedermeier, lost time in the pack. This put Nieniadma in the undisputed lead, but it also deprived her team of two strong cards they could use in the upcoming climbs.

Juliette Ravas (DSM-Filmenig Post NL) stayed in the same position, 37 seconds behind Vos. Erika Magnardi (UAE Team ADQ) made a big leap to 15th overall, 1:20 behind. The Italian climber lost contact with her team in the last few meters of the opening TTT and lost another 4 seconds there, but her position in the echelon allowed her to pull away from many GC rivals and put her in a great position to replicate or even improve on her 8th place overall from last year.

For the Movistar team, Shayla Gutierrez took fifth place on this stage, but their GC cards, Olivia Baril and Rian Lippert, were unable to join the front group. Baril is now 2:19 behind and Lippert is another 4 seconds behind.

FDJ-SUEZ GC contender Evita Mujic is 2:20 behind in the red jersey. Mavi Garcia (Liv-Alula-Jeico) also lost valuable time in his home Grand Tour.

Sara Gigante (AG Insurance-Soudal) was 2:43 behind and Pauliena Loijackers (Phoenix-Deceuninck) 2:59 behind. Kim Katzow and Clara Koppenburg (both EF Education-Cannondale) also lost time and may be asked to support Faulkner, but the time loss also gives them a certain freedom if the team continues to aim for stage wins.
