Honatan Narvaez (Ineos Grenadiers) won the first stage of the 107th Giro d'Italia in Turin to claim the first Maria Rosa of the 2024 Giro d'Italia.
Tadey Pogachar (UAE Team Emirates) went on the attack and pulled 10 seconds ahead of his GC rivals.
Other favorites, including last year's runner-up Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers) and Ben O'Connor (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale), kept their losses in check, but on the first summit finish of the second stage on May 5, the rampant Slovenians They will have to fight to keep up.
The race is expected to settle into a more normal rhythm on Monday's third stage, where sprinters will likely fight for victory in Fossano, south of Turin.

The second stage will be even more competitive with the first summit finish at Santuario di Oropa (11.8km, 6.2%, max 13%).
Comparisons between Pogachar and Pantani are warranted on Sunday's second stage, the Oropa Sanctuary,
In 1999, Pantani was in Maria Rosa for just one day when the Giro climbed Oropa in stage 15.
Pantani dropped his chain at the top of the climb, was forced to stop at the side of the road, and then made a furious charge, overtaking 49 riders, including GC rival Paolo Savoldelli, to take the solo victory at the summit.
It was a "peak" moment for Italy's Tifosi in Pantani, but it came just six days before he was expelled from the race at Madonna di Campiglio.
