According to Wielerflits.nl, Jonas Vingegaard will not be at the start of the Criterium du Dauphiné on June 2, but the team hopes he will recover in time to defend his Tour de France title in July.
Vingegaard suffered a broken collarbone and ribs and a collapsed lung after a fall on the descent of stage 4 of the Ituria-Basque on April 4. He was released from a Spanish hospital on April 16.
In addition, sport director Merijn Zeeman confirmed to Wielerflits that Vingegaard will not be attending the Tour team training camp in the Sierra Nevada this weekend.
"It will be difficult for Jonas to win the Tour, but not impossible," Zeeman said. 'He is working hard every day on his rehabilitation under the guidance of the medical staff and his physiotherapist. We will keep open the possibility that he will be ready in time for the Tour start in Florence. We know that Jonas is very talented and that his recovery will be very fast.
"Every week we will assess the situation. The medical staff cannot say much at this time about what program he will be able to follow. But we are certainly hopeful that he will be able to defend his Tour title."
Wout Van Aert will also miss the high altitude camp as he continues to recover from a broken sternum, ribs, and collarbone sustained in a crash at Doire de Flanderen.
Van Aert was scheduled to compete in the Giro d'Italia but was unable to due to injury. Zeman said that he would "keep all options open" for the next few weeks while monitoring both athletes' recoveries.
"Does Jonas need Dauphine to be in good shape for the Tour? It's not necessarily necessary," Zeman said. For Jonas, the Dauphiné is not an important race for the Tour. 2021, he competed in the Dauphiné after recovering from an injury. In 2021, he competed in the Dauphiné after recovering from an injury and came in second on the final stage. With a good training block during that period, I am confident that Jonas will also improve his form and be at his best for the start of the Tour."
[16There is speculation that he will compete in the Tour of Norway later this month, but the team could not say when Van Aert will return. Zeman denied this. Wout is not yet at the stage where he can make that choice now. In the most favorable scenario, Norway is possible. But we cannot say anything about that yet."
