Lizzie Deignan was a last-minute addition to Lidl Trek's La Vuelta Femenina roster after the medical team gave her the go-ahead to race for eight days, four weeks after she broke her arm in a crash at the Tour of Flanders.
"I'm happy to be recovered in time for the Vuelta. It was obviously disappointing to crash in Flanders and not be able to ride the rest of the classics. [But my recovery since then has been better than expected, and it's great that I'm already ready to race again."
Ridltrek confirmed to Cycling News last week that Dignan's recovery is going well and that he has started training indoors, but that his participation in La Vuelta Femenina is still uncertain.
However, the team announced its roster on Thursday, which includes Degnan, Elisa Longo Borghini, Ellen van Dijk, Amanda Spratt, Elinor Backstedt, Brody Chapman, and Gaia Lealini.
La Vuelta Femenina will take place from April 28 to May 5, and Deignan confirmed that the stage race will help him regain his form and prepare for other goals later in the summer.
"My expectations for the race are first to complete the eight days in one piece and be stronger at the end than when I started," Deignan said.
"It's really great to be on the start line as part of the team.
Lidl-Trek had a strong early season race campaign, with Elisa Balsamo winning two stages at Setomana Valenciana, Trofeo Alfredo Binda, and Bourges des Pannes, giving her four wins. Elisa Longo Borghini also won three spring classics, including the Tour of Flanders and Brabante Paille, while van Dijk took stage wins at the Vuelta Estremadura Femina and the Tour de Normandie.
"Overall, we have a really strong women's race group and I think we have a good chance to keep the momentum we built up in the spring classics and get some more results," Deignan said.
