The Amstel Gold Race women's race was interrupted and race time shortened due to an automobile accident that occurred on the pre-race route. A police officer was injured when a motorcycle and a car collided on the ascent of Bergseweg.
The race was suspended at 45 km to allow ambulances to pass the race and reach the scene of the accident. The peloton stopped at 11:00 local time and the race did not resume for over an hour.
"At around 11:00 this morning, a police motorcyclist supervising the Amstel Gold Race was injured in a collision with a car at the Bergseweg in #Voerendaal. He was transported to the hospital by ambulance. Bergseweg has been sealed off due to an investigation by TTOV," a statement from the Limburg provincial police said.
After more than an hour of interruption, it was decided that the women's race would remain neutral until it reached the finish circuit in Valkenburg. It was then announced that the racers would complete three laps of the finish circuit instead of the originally scheduled four laps.
Clara Emon (EF Education Cannondale) and Quinty Schones (Volker Vessels) were attacking just ahead of the peloton when the race was suspended.
The men's race, which started after the women's, was rerouted to avoid this incident, causing the men's peloton to miss the climb up Bergseweg.
The resumption of the women's race was complicated by the need to avoid the overlap of two Amstel Gold races on the winding route around Limburg.
