'Stupid' but 'Good Lesson' - Premature Celebration at Amstel Gold Race Causes Vives to Stumble

When she raised her hands just before the finish, Lorena Wiebes (SD Works-Pro Time) thought she had won the women's Amstel Gold race after a shortened version that surprised her by keeping up with the punchers' attack in Cauberg. However, Marianne Vos (Team Vismaris-a-Bike) threw her machine across the finish line to take the win and push Vives into second place.

Vives was understandably upset, having missed out on what would have been a valuable, and somewhat unexpected, addition to his results due to his mistake.

"I feel terrible. It was very stupid. Well, it was a good lesson and I hope it won't happen again," Wiebes told Dutch broadcaster NOS after being consoled by his teammates.

Everything was going according to plan for Wiebes and SD Walks Pro Time until the last meter. Lotte Kopetsky and Blanca Vas chased the breakaway group, and after a 22-man group formed in Cauberg, Demi Vollaring kept the group together to allow Wiebes to sprint.

"When Longo Borghini went, I was already on her left. She almost pushed me, but I managed to get through. Because of that, I was so focused on the right side that I didn't see Marianne coming," Vives said.

"I saw Marianne at the finish and thought, 'Oh, maybe I'm not going to make it. I usually run as fast as I can to the line, but Marianne was unexpected," she continued.

A week after winning Paris-Roubaix Femme, Kopecký worked for Vives during the race and commiserated with her teammate after the race.

"It's really hard, especially for Lorena. Especially for Lorena. Because it happened to one of our best athletes. She won't sleep well tonight, but maybe in a few weeks we can laugh about it," Kopecký told the Flanders broadcaster Sporza.

With his premature celebration, Wiebes joins the ranks of Eric Zabel and Julian Alaphilippe, who have lost races in similar fashion in the past. He said, "Fortunately, my teammates were there for me after the finish. Demi Volering immediately said to me, 'Now you can be hungrier,'" Wiebes said in a team media release. This is a race I want to put in my record books. Hopefully I can get revenge next year."
