Lemco Evenepoel was released from the hospital this weekend after undergoing surgery for a broken collarbone sustained in last Thursday's stage 4 crash in Iturria-Basque.
His team, Soudal-Quick Step, released a medical update confirming that the surgery was successful.
"After crashing in Thursday's Iturria-Basque stage 4, Remco Evenepoel underwent surgery on Saturday for a broken collarbone. [The surgery was performed successfully by Dr. Steven Klaes and the Belgian champion, who has won four races this season, was released from the hospital to recuperate.
Soudal-QuickStep has not confirmed the length of the recovery period or when Evenpoel will be able to return to training and competition. Evenpoel was involved in a serious crash at high speed that occurred on the descent of the Oraeta mountain on stage 4, with approximately 36 km remaining in the race.
The crash affected at least 10 riders, including Primoš Roglic (Bora-Hansgrohe), Jonas Vingegaard (Visma Lease-a-Bike), and Jay Wein (UAE Team Emirates).
Visma-Lease a Bike confirmed that Vingegaard fractured his collarbone and several ribs, while UAE Team Emirates confirmed that Wein fractured multiple vertebrae.
Soudal-Quickstep confirmed that Evenepoel fractured his collarbone and scapula after the crash.
Evenepoel released a video message in which he indicated that his short-term goal of competing in the Ardennes Classic would be affected by the injury.
However, he said that his long-term goals, such as the Tour de France and the Olympics, remain unchanged.
"Obviously, my short-term future plans will change," he said. But I hope and believe that our long-term goals will remain the same." So everything should be okay."
