Sara Gigante faces Richie Porte in time trial to set new Willunga record

Sarah Gigante won the Women's Tour Down Under with a stunning solo attack on Willunga Hill.

She now hopes to break her own Queen of the Mountain Strava record and challenge Willunga's official King, Richie Porte. Gigante will face Porte and hundreds of other riders in the Garmin-Willunga Hill Time Trial on Saturday.

The riders will start every minute from the Willunga start ramp, with Porte starting last, chasing the riders ahead of him. The fastest man and woman will receive $1,000 (£500, US$650).

Porte clocked 6:34 in 2020 for the 3km Old Willunga Hill strava section. His time remains at the top of the Strava leaderboard, despite thousands of riders targeting it.

Gigante set the women's best time on Willunga Hill in 2021 at the Santos Festival of Cycling, which replaced the World Tour race in the COVID-19 craze. At this year's Tour Down Under, a strong headwind prevented her from breaking the record, and Strava's section time was 9:02.

"I'll be back Saturday. It's the Willunga time trial, and Richie is my opponent," Gigante said provocatively.

"He retired, but I didn't. He pulled away from second stage winner Cecilie Uttrup-Ludwig (FDJ-Suez) and the rest of the field to take the overall win.

The 23-year-old from Melbourne showed her talent in 2019 by winning the Australian road race title while still a teenager. However, during her time with Movistar, she battled illness, health issues, and broken bones that limited her racing. She ended her contract with the Spanish team in late 2023 and joined AG Insurance-Soudal.

She had won the Willunga Hill twice, and the time trial would be her third victory on the climb, a special place for her.

"I came from the national championships in Buninyong with my teammate Anya Lu. I'm sorry, but we have to make a side trip to Willunga. Because I have to take a picture with this sign before I become queen of the mountain," Gigante revealed.

The sign, posed by Gigante, shows Porte's record of 6:39 and Gigante's record of 8:13. If Gigante sets a new record as he wishes, the latter record may have to be updated.
