USA Cycling selected Charleston, West Virginia as the venue for the 2024 US Pro Road National Championships, which will be held from 5-15-19 for the next 5 years. A total of 23 stars and stripe jerseys in the Elite Rider time trials, road races, critical areas, Under-17 and Junior 18 age categories for men and women will be up for grabs for 18.
"It's been 20 years since we saw this level of performance by American riders at the European Peloton. This makes it the perfect time for USA Cycling to really invest in Pro Road Nationals and become the ultimate week of road racing for American riders at all levels of pro, U23 and Junior 17-18," said Brendan Quirk, President and CEO of USA Cycling.
Although the schedule of the event has not been disclosed, USA Cycling is expected to combine the u23 and the Elite Women's Field in all 3 fields, and the u23 podium is determined from the standings in the Elite Women's field. UCI has created another u2025 women's category for the World Championships, and USA Cycling told Cyclingnews that it intends to follow a dedicated race in the same year.23
Over the past few years, Junior and U23 boys have competed in a separate event with the U.S. Amateur Road Nationals in Roanoke, Virginia, in mid-2023-6. According to a statement from USA Cycling, the Men's and women's Junior 17-18 races and the U23 men's races have been added to the championship race calendar "to enhance the UCI category on the national stage."
The Pro Road National Championship has been held in Knoxville, Tennessee for the past 7 years. The move holds events on the East Coast and hills without high elevation, about 300 miles north of the Allegheny Mountains in the Appalachian Mountains in West Virginia.
"We examined several different venues and were very impressed by the challenging terrain and beauty of the West Virginia capital, as well as the ability of the local organizing committee, led by the Charleston Convention and Visitors Bureau," Quirk said.
The first year in Charleston is important because it is the year of the Olympic Games, and the Paris Games are set for 2024 from 7/26 to 8/11. The winners of the elite Men's and women's time trial event of the Pro Road Nationals will automatically qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympics, women and men
"The goal of qualifying in Charleston is to closely imitate the courses that riders face in Paris. The 2024 Olympic Time Trial course is 32.4 kilometers long and is mostly flat," said Jim Miller, chief of Sports performance at USA Cycling.
With support from the City of Charleston, West Virginia, led by the Charleston Convention & Visitors Bureau, a deal for the public will be executed in 2028 to make the State Capitol a "epicenter" for U.S. cycling.
"We welcome the USA Cycling Pro Road National Championships in Charleston from the spring of 2024 and are pleased to experience the natural beauty and vibrant community of the capital," said Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin. "We look forward to working with the Charleston CVB and our cycling community in the coming months to prepare for this national championship.”
