Vingegaard Co-Leads Vuelta a España; Jumbo Visma Aims for Grand Tour Grand Slam

Jonas Vingegaard will compete in the 2023 Vuelta a España after winning the Tour de France.

"See you in Barcelona, see you in the Vuelta," Vingegaard told the Spanish sports newspaper Marca and other Spanish media on Sunday morning before traveling to Paris for the final stage of the Tour.

"I'm going for GC and so will Primoz (Roglic). Obviously we are the two leaders," he said in an interview before stage 21 of the Tour de France.

Vingegaard and Roglic stand out among a quality group of riders, including last year's Vuelta winner Remco Evenpole (Suredal-Quick Step) and the second and third places in this year's Giro d'Italia: Joao Almeida (UAE Team Emirates) and former Tour de France winner Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers).

Former Vuelta podium finisher Richard Calapaz (EF Education Easy Post), Enric Mas (Movistar) and Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates) are also confirmed.

Tadej Pogcal's UAE Team Emirates said early on that it would not be influenced by Vingegaard's decision, and the Slovenian is expected to focus on the end-of-season classics race rather than the Vuelta.

Vingegaard, who was crowned Tour de France winner for the second year in a row on Sunday, will have a month to recover before traveling to Spain for the start of the Vuelta a España in Barcelona on August 26.

He will start the Vuelta as co-team leader with Primoš Roglic and Jumbo Visma, who won the Giro d'Italia in May. Roglic is aiming for a record-breaking fourth Vuelta win this fall. Superdomestique Sepp Kuss is also expected to compete in the Vuelta once he recovers from his stage 20 crash and fatigue from the Giro d'Italia and Tour de France. Wilco Kelderman and Attila Valter are also on the team's long list.

It is not certain what role Vingegaard will ultimately play in Jumbo-Visma's plans for the Vuelta, but his presence will strengthen the team considerably as they fight to become the first team ever to win three Grand Tours in one year.

"Our goal is to win three Grand Tours this year," team manager Richard Plagge recently admitted to Het Laatste Nieuws.

Although Vingegaard has never raced two Grand Tours in the same season, he played a key role in the 2020 Vuelta supporting Roglic in the mountains, including an impressive stint on the demanding Alto de la Farapona in northern Spain.

The 2023 Vuelta a España features typical mountain routes, including summit finishes in Tourmalet and Angliru and a mid-distance time trial in Valladolid.
