Jonas Vingegaard: I felt relaxed going into this Tour de France.

Jonas Vingegaard is used to it by now. The Tour de France, the yellow jersey in Paris, the victor's speech on the Champs-Elysées. The modern tradition began with Lance Armstrong's infamous "cynic and skeptic" speech in 2005, but subsequent speakers have generally tended to be more diplomatic.

Bradley Wiggins and Geraint Thomas, of course, spoke with humor, but as in 2022, when handed the microphone, Wingegaard swung a straight bat and thanked the Jumbo Wisma team, his competitors, and his family.

"It's been a great year for us, a great Tour de France. Vingegaard added, "Of course, it all starts somewhere. 'Tonight we'll celebrate with a nice dinner.

Of course, there would not be much time for celebration in Vingegaard's schedule. On Sunday morning he received word that he and Primosz Roglic will be co-leading Jumbo Visma in the Vuelta a España, which leaves Barcelona on August 26.

Roglic, who has already won the Giro d'Italia in May, is looking for his fourth Vuelta title, and Vingegaard is looking to add to his rapidly growing palma. Jumbo Visma, meanwhile, is looking for a complete three-week Grand Tour victory.

"I already made my decision last November. I'm also really looking forward to the Vuelta," Vingegaard said at the start of Sunday's stage in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines. Of course I will enjoy winning the Tour de France today, but in a week's time I will focus on the Vuelta."

Since the Vuelta moved to its current slot on the calendar in 1995, only one rider, Chris Froome, has managed to win this race and the Tour in the same season, in 2017. Before taking the podium on the Champs-Élysées, Vingegaard made it clear that he will head to Spain in search of an overall win against a strong field that also includes Remco Evenpole (Soudal-Quick Step), Geraint Thomas (Ineos), and Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates).

"I think so. At least I hope so, but we will find out in a month," Vingegaard said. 'The plan is that me and Primosch, as leaders, are going to go out there and win as a team.'

But on Sunday evening, as dusk fell gently over Paris, Vingegaard reflected on the job just done: the Dane finished second in his debut Tour in 2021, but his victory a year ago came a year after two-time winner Tadej Pogachar (UAE Team Emirates) was still a surprise, given that he was running as the leading candidate for the yellow jersey.

Prior to the start of this year's race in Bilbao, most believed that there was little separating Vingegaard and Pogachar. However, in the first two days of the third week, the dynamic of the race, and perhaps the rivalry as a whole, changed.

After a startling run in the time trial in Combrue, Vingegaard ran the scales relentlessly one day later in the Col de la Rose as Pogachar struggled. Vingegaard said last week that he "fully understands" the skepticism of some spectators, but Jumbo Visma director Richard Plagge expressed frustration with the incredulity directed at his team over the past few days.

In any case, Vingegaard eventually arrived in Paris with a 7:29 lead over Pogachar. He would not, however, say which of his two victories in the Tour was the tougher one.

"It's hard to say. Last year we didn't win, so there was a lot of pressure on myself and the team. Last year we won, so I was a little more relaxed this time," said Vingegaard. Needless to say, he will be back next year to defend his title. I'm very, very happy and proud to have won my second Tour de France."
