Lotte Kopecký heads to the UCI World Championships in Glasgow for the first-ever combined UCI World Championships, where she will compete for multiple world titles in three track events and a road race.
The Belgian emerged with an opening stage win in Clermont-Ferrand, wore the yellow jersey for six days, climbed to the top of the Col du Tourmalet in the lead group, and finished third in the time trial in Pau.
She finished the eight-day race in second place overall behind SD Worx teammate Demi Vollering and with the green points jersey.
"I surprised myself, especially yesterday [on the Tourmalet Pass on stage 7], that I was one of the better sprinters, climbers, and time trialists.
"This Tour has been great for me. Before, I didn't really think about how I would approach this Tour de France. Everything went well and I was super recovered every day. I'm happy to be second in this Tour de France, to take the green jersey, and to have a great team."
[10Kopecky admitted that her most surprising finish was her sixth place finish in the Tour Marais. She was part of a select chase group that crossed the Col d'Aspen and climbed up the base of the Tourmalet. After Vollering made her winning attack, Kopecky said she settled into a rhythm to see how far she could go with some of the best climbers in the world.
She crossed the finish line 3:32 behind Vollering and ahead of her were Kasia Niewiadoma (Canyon-SRAM), Annemiek van Fruten (Movistar), Ashley Moolman-Pasio (AG Insurance-Soudal-Quick Step ), and Juliette Labouse (Team dsm-Filmenig) were the only ones present.
Kopecký went into the time trial in fourth place overall, despite losing the yellow jersey to Voerling on this climb. However, he finished third in the time trial behind teammate Marlen Reusser and Voerling.
"Yesterday I was sure I was going to lose the yellow jersey. This morning I was fourth overall, but I knew a podium finish was not impossible," Kopecky said.
"To be honest, before this Tour, I wasn't aiming for GC or thinking about this.
"I wasn't stressed before the time trial, I was just focused on what I had to do and trying to give everything I had left.
In several interviews during the Tour de France Fam, Kopecky revealed that he was happy with his role in SD Worx and did not want to be the sole leader of another team.
Asked if he could one day win the Tour de France Fam, Kopecký did not rule it out in the future, but said he still has ambitions for the classics.
"I'm not thinking about it at the moment. I'm happy with what I'm doing now. I love the classics and that is still my main goal. That's what I love the most."
"I'm not going to try to be a different type of rider. Not for the next few years. But maybe I'll give it a shot down the road. For now, I'm happy with where I am."
Kopecký has gained many fans across Belgium, and at a post-race press conference she said her phone had exploded with social media messages about her success in the Tour de France.
"I heard some of them, but the social media on my phone in my back [pocket] was vibrating the whole time. I don't think I realize it, but it's like it's getting pretty crazy," Kopecky said, noting that the Tour de France Femmes has helped boost the overall women's race.
"We already proved last year that the Tour de France is one of the biggest races. There was never a dull stage because it was live on TV every day, and every day it was an exciting, nail-biting finish. This is really good for women's cycling and I hope it inspires young girls."
There will be no rest for the Kopecky, who will board a plane to Scotland on Monday.
"I fly tomorrow to Glasgow, where the track competition starts next Sunday. I want to recover as much as possible from the Tour de France and stay healthy."
