Tadej Pogachar will compete in the UCI Road World Championships road race and time trial, leading the Slovenian men's elite team to Glasgow to take on a strong national team including Remco Evenpole, Wout Van Art and Mathieu Van der Pol.
After finishing the Tour de France in Paris in second place overall behind Jonas Vingegaard, Pogachar postponed his decision on the World Championships.
The Slovenian endured an almost race-long battle with Vingegaard, finally cracking in the third week. He won stage 20, but did not compete in the post-Tour criterium, Clasica San Sebastian, or Sunday's time trial at the Coupe de Europa de Grimpur.
However, after a week of recuperation at home, the Slovenian Cycling Federation allowed Pogachar to compete via social media.
Pogačar shaved 30 seconds off Richie Porte's 2016 record on the west side of the Col de la Madonné during a 105 km training ride over the weekend. He jokingly titled the ride "to lure Richie Porte back to Europe."
Pogachar will ride with Matevz Govekal, Kristijan Koren, Luka Mezgek, Domen Novak, Jaka Primozic, and Anze Skok in the elite men's road race on Sunday, August 6. He is the only Slovenian competing in the elite men's time trial on August 11.
The women's road race will feature Urška Žigart, Špera Kern, Urša Pintar, and Eugenija Bužak, who will also compete in the time trial.
Matej Mohorič and Primož Roglič will miss the road world championships. Mohorič won a stage at the Tour de France and a stage at the Tour de Pollogne, but considers the technical finishing circuit in the center of Glasgow to not suit him. Roglic could have competed in the time trial, but he is focusing all his energy on preparing for the Vuelta a España, which starts on Saturday, August 26.
After the World Championships, Pogachar plans to run one-day races in the last months of 2023, finishing the season at Il Lombardia, where he won in 2021 and 2022.
