Cycling tech brand 4iiiii today announced a breakthrough product when it comes to tracking stolen bikes.
The product comes in the form of the Precision+ power meter and is compatible with Apple's Find My, the popular location tracking software used on Apple devices.
According to 4iiiii, it works just like AirTag, which, for those who don't know, is a small coin-shaped device that leverages Apple's vast coverage of devices worldwide. airTag (or the new 4iiii power meter), When marked as lost in the "Find My" app, it sends a Bluetooth signal to nearby Apple devices. These devices use GPS and cellular or WiFi to anonymously transmit your device's location. [Recently bankrupt e-bike brand VanMoof has incorporated this technology in its S3 model. Various brands also make holders for air tags, like Muc-Off's Tubeless AirTag holder, which allows you to attach or hide your device on your own bike.
Importantly, however, the 4iiiii Precision+ integration is the first example of a brand integrating technology into a component that many of us already have on our bikes.
Along with the Apple FindMy integration, 4iiiii has also launched a new Apple Watch app called Ride.
The Ride app can pair the Watch via Bluetooth with third-party sensors such as power meters and heart rate monitors from 4iiiii and other brands.
You can then track your ride, access workout views, and view heart rate, power, speed, cadence, and distance directly on your Watch. The data is uploaded to the Apple Fitness app and automatically uploaded to third parties such as Strava after the ride is over.
The new app is available for free download immediately from the Apple App Store.
The 4iiii Precision 3+ power meter was first introduced last year and boasts accuracy within ±1% and up to 800 hours of battery life.
The device weighs just 9 grams less than standard non-powered crank arms and is said to be "compatible with more frames than ever before" thanks to its low-profile pod (a plastic housing inside the crank arm that houses the strain gauge and electronics)
But with today's announcement of Find My integration comes another new feature, which 4iiiii calls "Automatic Terrain Selector," which sounds like something you'd find on a high-end Land Rover, but actually actually allows Precision 3+ to switch between different cadence measurement methods. On flat terrain, it uses an accelerometer to measure, and switches to a gyroscope measurement for rougher terrain and higher cadence sprints to maintain cadence, and thus power, accuracy.
Like many other crank-based power meters, the Precision device can be factory-added to existing crank arms in the aftermarket; simply send it to 4iiiii and they will install it for you before sending it back.
Positively, despite the added features, the price remains the same, between £334 and £529 ($334 and $529 / €334 and €529) depending on crank arm selection. Factory-installed options start at $329/£329/tbc euros.
Users can also upgrade their current 4iiiii units with the new technology for $29/TBC pounds/TBC euros.
