Biniam Girmay Misses World Championships After Crash in San Sebastian

Biniam Girmay has withdrawn from the Glasgow World Championships after crashing hard in Saturday's Classica San Sebastian.

The 23-year-old Eritrean rider was expected to be a medal contender after his success in the spring classics and sprints and his second place finish at the 2021 under-23 world championships in Belgium. Examinations at a Spanish hospital showed no broken bones in Guillemay, but according to Intermarche Circus Wanty, she fell at 60 km/h and suffered bruises and pain in her hip.

According to Cycling News, many Eritrean riders are having trouble securing visas to enter the UK for the World Championships, and Girmay apparently spent two days in Paris after the Tour de France applying for visas.

Natnael Berhane, Henok Mulubrahn, and Dawit Yemane appear to have secured visas in Istanbul. Berhane will race for the Turkish-registered Beykoz Belediyesi Spor Kulübü Continental team, while Mulubrahn will race for the Italian Green Project-Bardiani CSF-Faizanè and Yemane for the Bike Aid team.

However, Natnael Tesfazion, Melhawi Kudus, and Amanuel Gebregxavier have not obtained visas to enter the UK to participate in the elite men's road race on Sunday.

Girmay has carefully planned his racing season so that he can race in Europe and at home in Eritrea. However, he is not currently facing visa problems and plans to rest and recover for the end-of-season races.

"I am of course very disappointed to have to withdraw from selection for the World Championships, which has been my main goal this season since last winter," Gilmey said in an announcement from Intermarche-Circus Wanty.

"I was feeling good after the Tour de France, but the crash in Clasica San Sebastian caused me a lot of pain and I could not defend my chances for the world championships.

"Now I want to recover from this crash and prepare for the end of the season, targeting one-day races like the Grand Prix de Ploué and the Canadian Classics.
