Robert Stannard, Provisional Doping Suspension for Alleged Doping in 2018

Robert Stannard has been provisionally suspended for "using prohibited methods and/or substances" and is out of the Australian national team for Sunday's world championship road race in Glasgow.

Alpecin Deceuninck's Stannard revealed the suspension in a statement Wednesday.

The UCI has not issued a statement on Stannard's case, but his name has been added to the list of provisionally suspended players on the governing body's website.

"I have been notified by the International Cycling Union (UCI) that they consider me to have committed an anti-doping rule violation over four years ago," Stannard said in a statement released by his agent, Signature Sports.

"I have never intentionally or knowingly used a prohibited substance and therefore request that my case be referred to the UCI Anti-Doping Tribunal.

"I look forward to submitting my written statement of defense and am confident that I will be cleared of any false charges and be able to continue my career.

"Out of respect for the confidentiality of the proceedings, I will refrain from further comment."

AusCycling also released a statement on Wednesday, acknowledging Stannard's provisional suspension and confirming that he will not compete in Sunday's World Championship road race.

"AusCycling was informed earlier today of the provisional suspension of Rob Stannard by the UCI.

"Unfortunately, the provisional suspension for anti-doping rule violations will prevent Mr. Stannard from competing at the World Championships in Glasgow.

"We note that Mr. Stannard has rigorously rejected the reasons for his provisional suspension and has indicated his intention to appeal, and AusCycling will continue to support Mr. Stannard and provide the necessary assistance to help the UCI resolve this matter quickly.

A spokesperson for Alpecin Deceuninck said in a statement to Cycling News that Stannard's provisional suspension was served on Wednesday.

"Alpecin Deceuninck has learned that the International Cycling Union (UCI) considers Robert Stannard to have committed anti-doping rule violations in 2018 and 2019. Stannard joined the team on a two-year contract on January 1, 2022, which expires at the end of this year," the team said.

"This specific case dates back to 2018 and 2019, more than four years ago, and more than three years before Stannard moved to our team. We respect and abide by the UCI's decision.

"In the meantime we will exchange further information with the athlete, his management and the UCI. Alpecin Deceuninck will refrain from further comment until he receives a full explanation from the above three parties."

Stannard turned professional with Mitchelton Scott at the end of 2018 and spent three seasons with the team before moving to Alpecin Deceuninck in early 2021.

He won his first professional victory in the 2022 Tour de Wallonie, but his last win came last month when he finished 19th overall in the latest edition of the same race.
