Oscar Only: "The Vuelta a España is a big step up.

As well as the World Championships in Glasgow, there are other notable events happening in Scottish cycling this week.

In the Tour de Pollogne, 20-year-old Scottish rider Oscar Only (Team DSM-Filmenig) finished 10th overall in his debut season as a World Tour rider.

He finished fourth in the toughest stage of the race, the brutally difficult second stage with a summit finish in Carpathians, and fifth in the second stage 24 hours later, placing him fifth overall before the crunch time trial in Katowice.

However, racing against the clock on a flat, power rider-friendly course was never a strong suit for a lightly built climber like Only, and he was nearly a minute behind stage winner Mattia Cattaneo (Sourdal-Quickstep).

Still, 10th place overall in the final standings was enough to earn Only the Björg Lambrecht Prize, given annually to the winner of the Tour de Pollogne's Best Young Rider contest, in honor of the talented Belgian rider who died in a crash during the race on August 5, 2019.

"To do well here gives me confidence, and I was doing pretty well in the early part of the season, but I fell a little bit in the Dauphiné," Onley told Cycling News during the Tour de Pollogne.

"I had a lot of races and I got sick during them, so I struggled there. So I'm happy to be back here and fighting for the win."

"This is a preparation race after coming back from the high altitude. So after this I'm going to concentrate on the Vuelta."

Onley will not be racing the World Championships on his home roads in Scotland, and for good reason.

"It's not a course that suits me that well. But it's a great event for Scotland and I'm looking forward to seeing it on TV when I get back to Girona," he told Cycling News.

It has barely been a year since Only started racing regularly at the professional level, and while he won a stage at the prestigious Giro Ciclistico Valle d'Aosta, in the CRO race, 2023 Tour de Pollogne winner Matej Moholycz (Bahrain Victorious), He finished third behind Tour de France winner Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo Visma).

In 2023, Only has already won the young rider of the year award at the Volta ao Algarve. His sixth place at the Tour de Hongri was also a promising result, and his 2.2 Alpe d'Isère was second overall behind another young rider making a name for himself in the Pollogne, Belgian Renate van Eotveldt (Lot Dostony).

"I didn't know what to expect from this race, as it was my first high altitude training camp. [but] Pollogne suits me. So me and Max [Poole, my teammate] went for the GC. In principle, this kind of course suits me better than Max.

Fourth place in the Carpacci summit finish on stage 2 was Only's first notable result in Pologna, and he followed it up with fifth place on the tough climb to Dusiniki Zdroz on stage 3.

"The plan was that if the escape was successful, Max would follow and I would sit on the wheel and save myself for the final kick," Onley said of his stage 2 finish.

"Luckily I was able to catch the two guys (Magica and van Evert) who got away before me.

"I prefer the climbs to be a little harder, so there's no one like Mohoric.

Of his fifth place on the short, steep climb of stage 3, Onley said: "A lot of what I got there was due to positioning. It was important to get into as good a position as possible on the downhill right-hander."

"But I made a little mistake. He hesitated a bit before the summit, which prevented him from getting a better result.

Only will now prepare for the Vuelta a España, which he recognizes as a "big step up."

He said he is looking at the next step in his career and will apply the same strategy of learning as he has in the past.

"I think it will be a process similar to other races, where you learn from the more experienced competitors for three weeks instead of one week.

"I don't know that much about the climbs yet, but there should be some stages that suit me. We have a really strong group of riders with Jumbo, Ineos, and Sourdal.
