Longo Borghini taken to hospital for medical checkup after crash at Giro Donne

Elisa Longo Borghini crashed on the final descent of stage 5 of the Giro Donne and finished the race in Ceres, but was taken to a nearby hospital to rule out the possibility of concussion.

"Elisa crashed on the final descent of today's stage. A few minutes later she was back in the saddle and finished the stage. After the stage, the team stated in a press release, "Elisa was immediately examined and the team doctor has decided to take her to the hospital for further tests. [Elisa in particular is experiencing pain in her right shoulder. After hitting his head, he will undergo the appropriate tests to rule out concussion. More details to follow.

Longo Borghini crashed on the last downhill hairpin corner of the stage. However, he dropped from second to 17th in the overall standings, 8:18 behind overall leader Annemiek van Fruten (Movistar).

Lidl-Trek later confirmed that Longo Borghini suffered bruises and abrasions but no broken bones, and a medical check ruled out the possibility of concussion, but will continue to follow up.

The team will decide Wednesday morning whether Longo Borghini will compete in stage 6 of the Giro Donne.

"Elisa Longo Borghini has been released from the hospital in Chilières. At the end of today's Giro Donne stage, Elisa, along with team doctor Francesca della Bianca, was checked in for the finish in Cheles after a crash that occurred on the descent from the last QOM.

"Elisa underwent X-rays of her pelvis and right shoulder, the most painful parts of her body, and the possibility of fractures was ruled out. She also underwent a brain scan, which showed no damage, as she had hit her head during the collision (although her helmet was not damaged). Elisa then underwent a neurological examination, which yielded no further results. Elisa also sustained several contusions and abrasions on the right side of her body, particularly on her shoulder, shoulder blade, and ribs.

"Given the concussion protocols required in such cases, Longo Borghini will be under the supervision of the team doctor for the next few hours. Therefore, a decision on whether or not Elisa will participate in the start of stage 6 of the Giro Donne will be made tomorrow morning.

After Monday's stage win, Longo Borghini enters the queen stage of the Giro Donne in second place overall, 49 seconds behind race leader Van Hulten.

The Passo del Lupo, known as the Sima Coppi, came into play early in the race, and Van Vleuten tried to use the Passo del Lupo to further extend his lead in the GC, but Longo Borghini could not follow. Van Vleuten, accompanied by Longo Borghini's Lidl Trek teammate Gaia Lealini, attempted to reach the top of Passo del Lupo, but the two were caught by a chase group that included Niamh Fisher Black (SD Works) and Longo Borghini.

Then, between the bottom of Passo del Lupo and the next categorized climb, a third chase group joined the lead group. Antonia Niedermeier, the eventual stage winner, attacked on the final climb, leaving Longo Borghini and Van Fruten to chase the young German.

The two caught the Canyonslam rider on the final climb to Sant'Ignazio, and Van Fluten pulled away from the Italian champion toward the summit.

Van Vleuten chasing Niedermeier and Longo Borghini chasing Van Vleuten took a risk on the descent and both crashed on the same corner.

Van Vleuten first lost control before a hairpin turn and went off the track surface into the grass.

"It was really exciting. It's what we want women's cycling to be, exciting," Van Vleuten said after the stage. I think we put on a show today. We took a little too many risks on the last descent to make it even more exciting, but it wasn't a bad thing.

However, seconds later, Longo Borghini overshot the same corner.

While Van Vleuten was able to keep going almost immediately, Longo Borghini took longer to get off the ground and back on his bike, losing valuable GC time in the process.

Former Paris-Roubaix champion Longo Borghini eventually returned to the road and, accompanied by teammate Shirin van Unrooy, finished 7:33 behind, with cuts and bruises on his arms and face.

As a result of Longo Borghini's crash and time loss, stage winner Niedermeier is now in second place overall, 2:07 behind Van Vleuten, while Veronica Eworth (EF Education-TIBCO-SVB) remains in third place overall, 2:18 behind.
