Doctors give Balsamo the go-ahead to begin training after he recovers from a broken jaw.

Elisa Balsamo has been given the green light to begin training by her doctors after taking some time to recover from injuries sustained in a crash at Ride London in May.

Her team, Lidl-Trek, confirmed that Balsamo still needs treatment for a tooth broken in the crash, but she is now eyeing the Tour de France Femme and a possible Glasgow World Championship.

"Although the injuries sustained at the Ride London, particularly a compound fracture of the right mandibular condyle and mandibular union, have put her season on an abrupt pause, Elisa Balsamo can see the light at the end of the tunnel," Ridltrek said in a statement Wednesday.

"With clearance from both a maxillofacial surgeon and an orthopedic specialist, Elisa has now resumed training on the road.

"Although she still needs dental work to fix the tooth she broke in the crash, Elisa's focus can now shift from recovery to preparing for her return to racing. Like Lidl-Trek, her ambition is the Tour de France Femme, but a final decision will be made closer to the competition. After the Tour de France Femme, her next goal is to participate in the World Championships in Glasgow."

Balsamo's injury was sustained in a crash during the opening stage of the RideLondon Classic on May 26.

He underwent successful surgery at La Madonnina Hospital in Milan to treat a complex fracture of the right mandibular condyle and mandibular union. He also underwent treatment of an intra-articular fracture of the left hypocondyle and a fracture of the right navicular bone, which did not require surgery.

Lidl Trek (then Trek Segafredo) would not confirm Balsamo's recovery time or his return to training and competition immediately following treatment, but stated that he would need to undergo physical therapy as part of his recovery plan for the next two months.

Balsamo had a strong spring classic campaign, finishing second in the Trofeo Alfredo Binda and the Classique Bourges des Pannes. He then competed in the Tour de Flanders and Paris-Roubaix while studying modern literature in Turin before returning to racing in the Vuelta a Burgos Feminas and RideLondon, where he crashed on the first stage.

When Balsamo returns to competition at the Tour de France Femme, he is expected to aim for a stage win and possibly the green points jersey.

At the Glasgow World Championships, Balsamo, a former world champion in road racing and world champion in team pursuit, will look to make the Italian national team in both road and track events.
