Lorena Wiebes leaves Giro Donnay to focus on Tour de France women's sprint

Lorena Wiebes (SD Worx) will not be on the start line for stage 7 and has pulled out of the Giro d'Italia Donne early to concentrate on the Tour de France Fam Avec Zwift, which runs from July 23 to 30.

"Lorena Vives will not start stage 7 of the Giro Donne. It will be a recovery period in anticipation of the Tour de France Femme," SD Worx announced on Thursday.

Viebes and SD Worx, one of the fastest sprinters in road racing, had set their sights on a stage win at the Giro Donne.

On stage 4, Borgo Val di Taro, they won a group sprint to take fourth place. He also came close to victory on stage 6 in Chenelli, but finished second when his Maria Rosa, Annemiek van Fruten, attacked for the win late in the race.

The Giro Donne will have Friday as a rest day as riders travel to Sardina for the final two hilly stages to Sassari and Olbia.

Director Danny Stam has built a lead-out train exclusively for Vives that includes riders Barbara Guarischi, Elena Cecchini, Ronneke Uneken, and Christine Majerus.

Wiebes has won nine races so far this year and now has his sights set on the Tour de France Femme, the Glasgow World Championships, and the European Championships. At a press conference after stage 3 of the Giro Donne, she said she is using the event to prepare for her future goals.

"My first six months with Team SD Works are over and I love it. I feel like I've been here for a long time. I've already made a lot of progress with this team and I'm looking forward to the rest of the season," she said.

"I still have important goals with the Tour and hopefully the World and European Championships coming up. Therefore, I need to combine this Giro with my training block to prepare for what is to come."

She added that she is "looking forward to the rest of the season.

In the Tour de France Femme, SD Volks will focus on the overall contenders along with Demi Volering, while Vives will be the sprinter. Lotte Kopecky is also on the roster, but she will play a supporting role for SD Volks as she focuses on the Glasgow World Championships.
