Quinn Simmons Abandons Stage 9 of Tour de France

Quinn Simmons (Lidl-Trek) has joined the list of abandoners for the 2023 Tour de France.

"Since his big crash on stage 5, Quinn's condition has not improved as much as we had hoped. He is still feeling stiff and fatigued, so we have decided to rest him to focus on his recovery."

"He is still feeling a bit of stiffness and fatigue, so we have decided to give him a break to focus on his recovery.

Simmons, who took the lone win at the US Pro Road Race Nationals on June 24, was 1 hour, 46 minutes, and 24 seconds behind race leader Jonas Vingegaard and was not in contention for the overall. Instead, he was an important support rider for Trek Lidl team leaders Giulio Ciccone and Matthias Skjelmors, who took part in the race.

Simmons also plans to try for a stage win in the 2023 race, explaining before the race that "if I miss a stage win, the Tour will be a personal disappointment."

Simmons' victory in the U.S. National Championships set up his Tour campaign nicely. 'You go into the Tour with a lot of motivation,' he told a pre-race press conference. 'But now my motivation is up 10 percent, and I'm up 10 watts wearing this.'

Simmons supported Mads Pedersen during the Tour's sprint stages, leading Pedersen to a joyous victory on stage 8.

However, Ridle Trek's highest GC finish was 19th, 8:47 behind the yellow jersey.

Simmons' participation in the Tour de France was in jeopardy after he witnessed the tragic death of Gino Mader at the Tour de Suisse.

"For me, it's still something that bothers me," he said. We all know the dangers of this sport, but when you see it, it makes you question a little bit what you're doing with your life."

"I'm not sure I'll be able to compete in the Tour de France.

Simmons is the latest athlete to be abandoned in the race, one day after Mark Cavendish was forced to abandon his record-breaking ambitions.

The class entered stage 8 in 13th place overall, but was forced to abandon the race due to injuries sustained in a crash in the last 5 km that also involved Simon Yates.
