Specialized Introduces S-Works Torch Lace-Up Shoes

If you like lace-up cycling shoes, Specialized's new S-Works Torch Lace shoes are for you. According to Specialized, the new shoes are comparable in weight to their twin Boa S-Works Torch shoes and share many of the same features.

Specialized claims to have solved one of the main drawbacks of race shoes, which is that they are almost impossible to tighten or loosen while riding. The shoe's upper uses what the company calls "zone layering" technology, which it claims conforms to different foot shapes without stretching while riding.

They also used the Retul bike fit database to evaluate fit, resulting in a forefoot shape that is 4mm wider than the older S-Works 7 shoes, a feature shared with the Boa lace version of the S-Works Torch.

Other features are also shared with the Boa closed version, such as the I-beam outsole construction, which Specialized announced when it launched the Boa closed version, reducing weight by 20 grams per pair.

The Boa S-Works Torch made its appearance at the Tour de France, complete with painted logo. But if you need encouragement to choose a lace-up shoe, take a look at Tadei Pogachar's shoes. He wears the lace-up DMT KR SL.

Jonas Vingegaard, on the other hand, prefers the twin Boa Nimble Ultimates, rather than the lightweight Nimble Feet Ultimate, which he recently reviewed and rated highly, or the Nimble lace-up shoes.

Like all Specialized shoes, the new S-Works Torch Lace shoes feature a Body Geometry system designed to improve leg alignment and foot comfort.

This is a 1.5mm outward slant on the sole, which Specialized calls a varus wedge, which it claims improves foot stability and ankle, knee, and hip alignment.

They also come with a metatarsal button that widens the metatarsal bones to reduce hot flashes and numbness in the feet.

According to Specialized, the new S-Works Torch Lace shoes weigh 400 g per pair in size 42; the weight of the twin Boa closed version is not listed, since our S-Works Torch review had a pair weighing 440 g in size 43, we expect the weight of the S-Works Torch Lace shoes to be fairly comparable across sizes. Also, the Specialized Torch 3.0 weighs 496 g in size 42.

The S-Works Torch Lace shoes are priced at £300 in the UK and $349.99 in the US. They are available in sizes 36-49, half sizes 38.5-46.5, and in four colors: white, dune white (see headline image above), dark navy, and black.
