Tour de France Stage 14 Suspended Due to Massive Early Stage Crash

A group crash in the early kilometers of stage 14 of the Tour de France caused Louis Meintjes and Antonio Pedro to abandon the race.

The group crash occurred 6km into the stage when the peloton was grouped together amid a mix of early attacks and counter-attacks. The crash was apparently caused by a rider slipping on a wet corner.

The commissaires quickly made the decision to neutralize the stage and the peloton was suspended for 29 minutes before the race was finally restarted.

Pedro was treated along the roadside before being carried into an ambulance. The Spaniard became the second Movistar rider to abandon the Tour after leader Enric Mas crashed in Bilbao on the first day.

Meintjes retired with an arm injury. The Intermarque-Circus Wanty rider was in 13th place overall after two weeks of racing.

Maxime Van Gils (Lotto Doustony) and Mathieu Bourgodeau (Total Energy) were treated for injuries sustained in the crash but were able to return to the pack for the restart.

The race was suspended for nearly 30 minutes and the commissaires were neutralized for the first 2 km after the restart.

Shortly after the race resumed on the Col de Saxel in the third category, several riders involved in a crash dropped out from behind Perrotot, with Esteban Chaves (EF Education - Easy Post) soon becoming the third to drop out.

On Saturday's stage, the peloton will tackle the Col de Cou, Col du Fou, Col de la Lamaze, and Col de Joux Plaine climbs before the descent to the finish in Morzine.
