Another day, another draw. As in Saturday's Col de Joux Plane, Tadej Pogachar (UAE Team Emirates) tested Tour de France leader Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) as best he could in the summit finish of stage 15, but contact with Vingegaard all the way up the climb Pogachar is looking to make a difference in Tuesday's uphill time trial.
Pogachar, second overall, finished 16th behind stage 15 winner Wout Poels (Bahrain Victorious) and more than 5 minutes ahead of Carlos Rodriguez (Ineos Grenadiers), third overall.
However, while his UAE teammate Adam Yates made a late attack to move into fourth place, Pogachar and his team's main goal was to dislodge Vingegaard's narrow but stubborn grip on the yellow jersey.
"Of course, I'd like to make more of a gap, but against a strong rider like Jonas, I'm happy with a 10-second gap," Pogachar said after the stage.
"I tried to make the last climb hard. But Jonas is very good and I knew I couldn't drop him. [Once there was only a yellow jersey group of Adam Yates, Pogachar, and Vingegaard, the UAE took the unexpected tactic of sending Yates on the attack. Pogachar then stuck to Vingegaard's rear wheel and tried to break away in the last kilometer, but this was not successful.
"Adam took some seconds and he's getting closer to the podium in GC.
"We can be confident. It was a good team performance today."
"The 22km time trial before the rest day on the second day of the Tour is a technical, hilly course.
"I think the time trial will make the difference, and the stage after the time trial (stage 17) has the hardest climb in the world," Pogachar predicted.
"The time trial and the stage after the time trial [stage 17] have some of the hardest climbs in the world. [We did a reconnaissance of the time trial, and I really like the course. We will probably see it again tomorrow."Tomorrow [Monday] is a rest day and Tuesday will be full throttle with the TT. I know this course well and I think it suits me. I can't wait to get started."
