Steven Kruijswijk, who crashed in the early kilometers of the second stage to La Chaise d'Dieu, suffered a fractured pelvis and collarbone and will not be able to compete in the Tour de France this July.
The Jumbo-Visma rider was one of the riders who fell in the crash that forced Steph Klass (Total Energie) and Romain Conbeau (Team DSM) to abandon the race.
Kruijswijk was expected to be a key player for Jumbo-Visma in next month's Tour de France, where teammate Jonas Vingegaard is the defending champion.Kruijswijk, who finished third overall in the 2019 Tour last race, crashing on stage 15 to Carcassonne.
DSM also reported after the stage that Conbeau suffered serious injuries in the crash, fracturing his collarbone and scapula. Klass, on the other hand, suffered a broken elbow.
The 35-year-old Conbeau was in the provisional lineup of Jumbo Visma for this year's Tour, along with Wingegaard, Wout van Aert, Sepp Kuss, Christophe Laporte, Dylan van Baarle, Tiesj Benoot, and Nathan Van Hooydonk. Jumbo Visma's provisional lineup for this year's Tour.
Wilco Kelderman, who missed last month's Giro d'Italia with an injury, is the first reserve in Jumbo Visma's Tour de France lineup and may have to step up to replace Kruijswijk.
Jumbo-Visma's directeur sportif Merijn Zeeman confirmed over the weekend that Giro d'Italia winner Primož Roglič will not compete in the Tour de France.
"Before the season we assumed that he would also compete in the Vuelta. Primož also wants to win Il Lombardia. He certainly has those qualities."
Jumbo Visma has sent the bulk of his Tour team to the Dauphiné, while Vingegaard is putting the finishing touches on preparations for July. Van Aert will compete in next week's Tour de Suisse, and Kuss, who played a key role in Roglic's Giro win, is not expected to race until the Tour.
