Groenewegen and Bennett Disqualified for Deviant Behavior in Dauphiné Pass Sprint

Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe) and Dylan Groenewegen (Jayco Alura) each fell off the line in the sprint finish with 100 meters to go in stage 3, which was won by Christophe Laporte (Jumbo Visma).

Bennett, who finished second, and Groenewegen, who finished third, were forced into 33rd and 34th place, respectively, after the judges ruled that they had violated a rule requiring sprinters to hold the line.

Matteo Trentin (UAE Emirates) and Milan Menten (Lotto Dostony) were promoted to 2nd and 3rd place, respectively.

Bennett entered the 194.5km third stage to Le Coteau in second place behind leader Danny Van Poppel with 200m to go.

As Bennett began his sprint, Goveker and Groenewegen tried to accelerate past him on his right side, while Laporte took the clearer left side path.

Bennett, perhaps sensing an attempt to overtake from the right, moved from the center of the road to the barrier on the right side, blocking his path. Seeing the right side door close, Groenewegen eliminated Goveker with a body check and opened the left side line. The Slovenian narrowly avoided crashing and had to stop sprinting.

Laporte, meanwhile, took his second win of the Dauphiné, 11 seconds ahead of Julien Alaphilippe (Soudal-Quick Step), who missed the sprint with a late puncture.
