The first touchstone for the overall contenders in the 2023 Criterium du Dauphiné will be Wednesday's stage 4 individual time trial.
After three sprint finishes, the majority of the overall contenders are just 23 seconds behind race leader Christophe Laporte (Jumbo Visma). The Frenchman is no stranger to time trials, but is likely to be overtaken by the likes of teammate Jonas Vingegaard.
The action starts at 1:41 p.m. (CET) with current mountain leader Donavan Grondin (Alcare Samsic) first down the slopes of Cœur.
Mikkel Landa (Bahrain Victorious) and Enric Mas (Movistar) will start at 3:18 PM and 4 minutes later, respectively.
Both riders lost time in the intense early going and are 22 and 16 seconds behind the main pack in the standings.
David Gaudou (Groupama-FDJ) and Jai Hindley (Bora-Hansgrohe) will start at 3:31 PM, with Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) 10 minutes later.
Vingegaard (Jumbo Visma), the 2022 Tour de France champion, will start at 3:45 PM to show the world how well he is doing for his title defense in July. Behind him, all eyes will be on Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers), who is looking to recover from a devastating injury sustained in a collision with a bus in 2022.
In the final block, Richard Calapaz (EF Education-Easy Post) will be the third from last to start the overall at 3:58 pm, with Julien Alaphilippe (Soudal-Quick Step) and Laporte on the start list.
Organizers expect the time to be in the 39-minute range, with the overall standings to be determined by 4:39 PM
