Jumbo Bisma has reportedly lost sponsorship money from Gorilla, a German super-fast grocery delivery company, leaving an estimated €5 million hole in its 2023-2024 budget.
According to WielerFlits, the company, which became a sponsor midway through last season and adorned the sleeves of the Dutch team's jerseys, has stopped paying sponsorship fees.
In a statement released to the site, Jumbo Visma said, "We have an agreement and of course we will honor it as agreed," suggesting that the Gorilla logo will remain on team clothing.
Jumbo-Visma told Cycling News, "I have nothing more to add."
Gorillaz joined the team last year shortly after forming a partnership with title sponsor Jumbo Supermarkets throughout the Netherlands and Belgium; in December 2022, the company was acquired by Turkish competitor Getir for $1.2 billion ($956 million). However, after the COVID-19 pandemic and due to reduced customer spending, demand for grocery delivery waned.
The loss of Gorilla leaves a large void in Jumbo Visma's budget at a time when the company is looking for a successor to its title sponsor, Jumbo.
The Dutch supermarket chain plans to withdraw from all sports sponsorship by the end of next season, including sponsorship of the men's and women's cycling teams, the speed skating team, and Dutch Formula 1 driver Max Verstappen.
Jumbo CEO Ton van Veen said the company would meet its obligations through the end of 2024, but would pull out of cycling early if other sponsors wanted to enter before then.
"Sponsorship has brought us a lot of brand recognition, but we are now winning everything we can win," van Veen said. We invest more than 20 million euros in sports sponsorships every year, but every euro can only be spent once." We can't give that money back to our clients or invest it in sustainability or health.
The company has been hit by turbulence in recent months, with Dutch authorities launching a money laundering investigation and the resignation of former CEO Fritz van Eld. Last December, Jumbo's chairman, Karel van Eerd, died at the age of 84.
According to WielerFlits, Jumbo Visma's team management is in talks with various multinational and Dutch brands about the possibility of taking over Jumbo's title sponsorship slot.
Visma and Cervélo want to stay with a team that is looking to grow further and maintain its success in the Tour de France and Classics with Jonas Vingegaard, Primoš Roglic, Wout Van Aert, Dylan Van Baarle and Christophe Laporte He has already indicated his intention to do so.
Team manager Richard Plagge has already recently extended contracts with Vingegaard, Van Aert, and Laporte.
