As the Tour de France approaches, the player transfer market always comes alive, and the Tudor team of Lidl Trek and Fabian Cancellara has been linked to a number of riders for 2024 in an effort to bolster its roster early.
Trek-Segafredo will officially become Lidl-Trek on June 30 and will unveil its new colors on the eve of the Tour de France. With the entry of European supermarket chains, the budget is said to be significantly increased, and team management appears to be active in the transfer market, with Tao Geoghegan Hart and Jonathan Milano on their wish list.
Under UCI rules, teams and riders cannot reveal their future teams until August, but contracts are often signed months in advance.
Tao Geoghegan Hart was first rumored to be with Lidl Trek before his big crash at the Giro d'Italia. He is currently recuperating at his home in London, but according to Tuttobiciweb, he remains a target for Lidl Trek in 2024.
Geoghegan Hart won the 2020 Giro d'Italia and looked to be a contender this year, but crashed in the rain on stage 11 in Tortona and suffered a compound fracture in his hip.
He has been with Ineos Grenadiers since turning pro in 2017, but the British team already has Tom Pidcock and Eoghan Bernal under contract and continues to court Remco Evenpoel. Geraint Thomas is expected to extend his contract until at least 2024, while Carlos Rodriguez is likely to move to Movistar.
Lidle Trek is likely to spend big to expand its men's roster with Mads Pedersen, Giulio Ciccone, and Jasper Steuben, and sign up-and-coming Italian sprinter Jonathan Milan. The women's team is also likely to be strengthened.
Milan was the first Italian rider to win a stage and four second places in the Giro d'Italia, earning him the points jersey. He needs to improve his sprint technique and positioning, but the power and speed he has developed in track racing are necessary for the modern sprint. He will also be a reinforcement for the Lidl-Trek classical team.
According to Tuttobiciweb, other players on the transfer market include Arnaud Demare and Grupama-FDJ teammate Jake Stewart. Demare, who hopes to compete in the Tour de France despite David Gaudoux's refusal, is rumored to be moving to Arcare B&B Hotels in 2024.
Stewart recently completed the Giro d'Italia, becoming the first rider to celebrate Mark Cavendish's sprint victory in Rome; according to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the British sprinter is Astana and Cavendish is likely to take on the role of managing the team's sprints after the race.
Italy's Lorenzo Fortunato could also move from Eolo Cometa to Astana.
The Swiss Tudor team, coached by Fabian Cancellara, will remain a professional team in 2024, but is expected to strengthen its roster after a successful debut season in 2023.
Matteo Trentin has been with UAE team Emirates since 2021, but according to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the 33-year-old Italian could play a key road captain role for Tudor in 2024, and Bahrain Victorious' Gino Madar has also been linked to the Swiss team.
La Gazzetta dello Sport also reports that Ineos Grenadiers' directeur sportif Matteo Tosatto, who managed the team at the Giro d'Italia, has also been approached to work with Cancellara and Tudor, and Lidl-. Trek has also stated that it is interested in the Italian directeur sportif.
