The CIC-Tour Féminin International de Pyrénées 2023 was cancelled after two stages due to safety concerns.
Friday's opening stage was marred by a series of dangerous accidents, including oncoming traffic and parked vehicles blocking the road on the race route.
On Saturday, the peloton protested, and after repeated invalidations, the second stage was effectively reduced to a hill climb in Oatacum, which Marta Cavalli (FDJ-Suez) won to take the leader's jersey.
However, the final stage would not take place. After several teams withdrew from the race, the UCI took the step of canceling the entire schedule.
"For the safety of the riders, the UCI has taken the decision to cancel the Tour de Pyrenees.
"After consultation with the main stakeholders of the event, including the CPA, the teams, the commissaires and the organizing committee, today's stage will not take place."
Adam Hansen, president of the CPA, the professional riders' union, held discussions with riders, teams, and race organizers after the opening stage and assured them that conditions would improve for the second stage. However, concerns still remained, as riders protested on Saturday.
"The conditions on the second day were much better than the first stage, but safety is a condition [within the team] to practice the sport in a responsible way," said Jumbo Visma.
"The riders do not consider it responsible to run the third stage."
According to Hansen's letter to race organizers on Sunday morning, 17 teams indicated they would cancel the race, while seven teams voted in favor of racing the final stage.
The teams' decision to pull out reportedly sparked a dispute over UCI points, with some teams reluctant to pull out if it would give their rivals valuable points for future racing licenses.
"Given the safety risks involved, we firmly believe that bicycle racing is not worth risking the lives of female cyclists.
." Therefore, we support the women's decision to cancel the race and believe that the race results, including UCI points, should remain intact and that the women's efforts are duly recognized and rewarded."
