The cycling computer market is becoming increasingly crowded. However, the newly released Sigma ROX 12.1 EVO is about to change that and rival the features offered by many of the best cycling computers. [As the name suggests, the ROX 12.1 EVO is an evolution of the Sigma ROX 12 cycling computer we reviewed in 2021, centered around a 3-inch color touchscreen, with five additional case-edge buttons and, according to Sigma, a screen layout and font that ensures excellent readability. The new model uses.
Color mapping and route guidance and turn-by-turn navigation are included. The device provides three suggested, easiest, and shortest route options to reach a given destination. It also allows users to download routes from Strava, Komoot, and other apps, as well as create routes in the Sigma app or on the device itself.
The Sigma ROX 12.1 EVO also offers six sport profiles, including road cycling, gravel, e-biking, and indoor cycling, plus the ability to create up to 20 profiles yourself. You can also import workouts from TrainingPeaks and other training apps.
In addition to the usual heart rate monitor and power meter connections, the system also supports rear view radar, electronic gear shifting, and many e-bike systems.
Connectivity to external devices is possible via both Bluetooth and ANT+; Bluetooth Low Energy connectivity is used for pairing with smartphones, allowing the ROX 12.1 EVO to display incoming messages, calls, and e-mails. It can also send a distress signal and GPS coordinates if the device detects that the user has crashed.
There is also regular ride tracking functionality, and Sigma's "Ride" app can be used to analyze and share data and configure device preferences.
The Sigma ROX 12.1 EVO covers many of the features offered by competitors such as Garmin, Hammerhead, and Wahoo, although the latter does not currently offer a touch screen.
However, there are several areas where the ROX 12.1 EVO falls short of its competitors. For example, the three market leaders currently offer on-the-fly mountaineering profiles that work even when not following a pre-planned route. In addition, Garmin's latest Edge 840 and Edge 540 GPS units have solar charging options to extend battery life.
Other brands with GPS cycling computers include Giant/Stage, and while you can get many of the features of a cycling computer in the best cycling watches, the small displays are rather hard to read.
The Sigma ROX 12.1 EVO is the brand's first homegrown German-made cycle computer and can be purchased as a stand-alone device or with a gray or white case. The standalone price is €379.95 and the bundle price is €479.95. For more information on the new ROX 12.1 EVO, visit the Sigma website.
