'Absolute dogs of the sport at times' - George Bennett and Jay Bein drop out of Tour de Suisse

The UAE Team Emirates pair of Jay Vine and George Bennett have withdrawn from the Tour de Suisse due to a crash.

Vine was forced to pull out of the race after crashing on stage 4 at Leukerbad, while Bennett was forced to sit out stage 5 due to lingering injuries sustained in Monday's crash.

"Unfortunately, George Bennett will not start today's Tour de Suisse due to a crash on stage 2. He will return home to recover," a statement from UAE Team Emirates said on Thursday.

Bennett, a New Zealand native, has been training in the Sierra Nevada with the UAE Team Emirates Tour de France team for the past few weeks. He was one of Tadei Pogachal's support guards at last year's Tour, but was withdrawn from the race after testing positive for COVID-19 on his first rest day.

"He is an absolute dog of the sport. Game over in Switzerland after a filthy crash on stage 1," Bennett posted on Instagram.

"I don't think it's damage that a few days on the couch won't fix and I'll be back on the road in a few days. I was a little lucky to escape the crash at that speed.

Bennett's abandonment follows that of teammate Wein, who suffered a "suspected subluxation of the right shoulder and abrasions on the leg" in the stage 4 crash; according to UAE Team Emirates, Bennett will undergo further tests on Thursday to confirm his injuries.

Wein was riding the Tour de Suisse after making his Giro d'Italia debut in May. His overall classification challenge ended on the icy descent of the Colle delle Radici on stage 10, but he recovered to play a key role in helping Joan Almeida finish third overall in Rome in the final week.
