Gino Mader dies after crashing in Tour de Suisse

Gino Mader has died after crashing on the descent of the Albula Pass in stage 5 of the Tour de Suisse. The news was announced by the Bahrain Victorias team on Friday.

Meder, 26, was airlifted to the hospital Thursday afternoon after suffering serious injuries near the finishing town of La Punt.

Doctors fought all night to save his life, but his death was announced by the team shortly after noon Friday.

"It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we must announce the death of Gino Mader," said a statement from the Bahrain Victorias team. [After a serious crash in stage 5 of the Tour de Suisse on Friday, June 16, Gino was seriously injured and lost his fight to recover. [Our entire team is devastated by this tragic accident and our thoughts and prayers are with Gino's family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.

The race organization had issued a press statement after the crash on stage 5, which occurred at the 197-kilometer mark of the descent of the Albula Pass. The crash also involved American Ineos Grenadiers rider Magnus Sheffield, who was taken to the hospital with concussion.

The team added that after this high-speed accident, Mader was resuscitated by medical staff on the scene and CPR was also performed.

"Despite the best efforts of the phenomenal staff at Cool Hospital, Gino was unable to survive this, his last and greatest challenge, and at 11:30 a.m. we said goodbye to one of the shining lights of our team," the Bahraini statement said.

"Gino was an extraordinary athlete, a model of determination, and a valued member of our team and the entire cycling community. His talent, dedication, and passion for the sport were an inspiration to us all."

Madar's professional career began in 2019 with Dimension Data, joining Bahrain in 2021. The Swiss rider won stage victories at the Giro d'Italia, Tour de Suisse, and Tour de Romandie, as well as the Best Young Rider award and fifth place overall at the 2021 Vuelta a EspaƱa.

Milan Elsen, managing director of Bahrain Victorious, emphasized not only his talent as a rider, but also Maeder's human qualities.

"We are devastated by the loss of an exceptional cyclist, Gino Mader," Elsen said. 'His talent, dedication, and enthusiasm were an inspiration to us all. Not only was he a very talented cyclist, he was also a wonderful person off the bike.
