Tour de Suisse organizers have decided to cancel stage 6 in memory of Gino Mader. The Swiss rider died Friday morning after crashing on the descent of Albula Pass in the finale of stage 5.
The peloton will ride the remaining 20 km of the route to Overville-Lieri together on Friday as a memorial to Mader. The decision to ride this part of the stage was made in consultation with the race organization and Meader's family.
"The entire organization, all teams and all riders are heartbroken. The entire organization, all the teams, all the riders are heartbroken. It's really hard to put into words," race director Olivier Sen told reporters in Cool on Friday. 'Gino was a great rider and a great human being. Gino was a great rider and a great human being.
"Today is about Gino and nothing else. We can talk about everything else later. We will be doing a memory ride at the end of the course. We're going to run in memory of Gino, and we're going to run neutral with the group all the way to the finish."
Stage 6 of the Tour de Suisse was originally scheduled to start in La Punt and return over the Albula Pass, but due to a rock avalanche in the area on Friday morning, the stage was shortened and the start changed to Chur.
Bahrain-Victorius announced Meder's death shortly after noon, minutes before the changed sixth stage was to start in Chur. The Tour de Suisse immediately announced that the start of this stage would be postponed. Later, after consulting with the teams, riders, and the Maeder family, Zen decided to cancel the stage.
The riders boarded the team bus and offered their condolences to their fallen colleague for the final 30 km.
"Gino, thank you for giving us light, joy, and laughter. Today and every day we run for you."
