The cycling community paid a moving tribute to Gino Mader following his death on Friday, June 16. He was 26 years old.
Meader was airlifted to the hospital on Thursday, June 15 with serious injuries after crashing on the descent of the Albula Pass in stage 5 of the Tour de Suisse. His team, Bahrain Victorious, announced his death shortly after noon local time Friday. [Our entire team is devastated by this tragic accident and our thoughts and prayers are with Gino's family and loved ones at this incredibly difficult time," Bahrain Victorious wrote in a statement.
"Gino was an extraordinary athlete, a model of determination, and a valued member of our team and the entire cycling community. His talent, dedication, and passion for the sport were an inspiration to all of us."
[6Upon hearing of his tragic passing, the cycling community paid tribute to Mader's life and offered condolences to his family, friends, and loved ones.
Milan Elsen, managing director of Bahrain Victorious, was one of the many people in the cycling community who spoke of Meader's personality, calling him "an inspiration to us all."
"We are devastated by the loss of an exceptional cyclist, Gino Mader," Elsen said. His talent, dedication, and enthusiasm were an inspiration to all of us." Not only was he a very talented cyclist, he was also an amazing person off the bike."
