Tour de Suisse organizers have announced that the race will resume for the final two days this weekend after Friday's Oberville-Lieri stage, held as a tribute to the late Gino Mader, was declared invalid.
The Swiss rider was injured on the descent of the Albula Pass finale of stage 5 and died in a hospital in Sur. The teammate of Meder's Verlaine Victorious, who led the peloton across the finish line at the end of Friday's memorial ride, has withdrawn from the rest of the Tour de Suisse.
The peloton will cover the full course of stage 7, but will decide the overall classification 18.8km from the finish, before the descent of the Ottenberg, a Category 3 climb. The Tour de Suisse will conclude on Sunday with an individual time trial in Abteville.
The third Tour de Suisse women's race, which starts on Saturday, will take place as scheduled.
Late Friday night, the management of the Tour de Suisse released a statement saying that after consulting with Mader's family, riders, teams, and race organization staff, they have decided to proceed with the event.
Olivier Sen, director of the Tour de Suisse, said, "After consulting with all parties involved, our management supports this decision and is trying to hold the last two stages of the men's race in a suitable environment."
The statement explained that Saturday's stages will be fully raced, but that the overall standings will be determined before the final descent.
"Stage 7 will be conducted as a race. However, the overall classification will be decided 18.8 km before the finish. The stage winner will be decided at the finish line in Weinfelden.
"The time trial on Sunday, June 18, 2023 will also take place in race mode. Accordingly, the overall winner and the final ranking of the 2023 Tour de Suisse will be determined."
"The stage winners will be determined at the finish line in Weinfelden.
Senn confirmed that the four-day Tour de Suisse Women will take place without any changes to the planned schedule. She said, "The women and all the teams deserve to be in the Tour de Suisse Women. 'We are confident that we can offer women riders a professional and safe race.'
