A German truck driver suspected of running over and killing David Rebellin last November has been arrested by German police.
62-year-old Wolfgang Rieke is being held in Münster, the Vicenza prosecutor's office announced.
The German newspaper Bild quoted prosecutor Elmer Ham as saying that Rieke, who was wanted on a European arrest warrant, had turned himself in to police.
German authorities will decide within the next 60 days whether to extradite Rieke to Italy (under EU law). German police have so far been unable to arrest Rieke. [He committed a hit-and-run in Foggia in 2001, but the statute of limitations overturned his conviction, and in 2014 he was charged with drunken driving in Chieti.
Rebellin, 51, had just retired after 29 years in the pro peloton; on November 30, he was hit and killed while riding his bicycle in Montebello Vicentino.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, citing the Vicenza Prosecutor's Office, Leake got out of the cab, approached Rebellin, and quickly returned and drove away, which was filmed by several witnesses.
German investigators, with the help of Italian carabinieri, tracked the truck and found deformation in the area where it had struck Rebellin and signs that it had been washed with concentrated acid detergent.
