Fabio Jacobsen pointed to the sky in honor of Gino Mader on the final stage of the Baloise Belgian Tour in Brussels on Sunday. The sprint win was dedicated to the Swiss rider, who died in a hospital in Chur after being injured on the descent of the Albula Pass in the stage 5 finale.
"This victory is obviously for Gino Mader. It's the only thing we can do for him," Jakobsen said, according to sporza.be. 'The last two days have not been easy for anyone. Especially for his family and friends.
Jacobsen, who was mortally wounded in a downhill sprint at the 2020 Tour de Pollogne, criticized the finish of the fifth stage of the Baloise Belgian Tour in Brussels, which included a corner with 300 meters to go.
He expressed confidence that the soon-to-be launched safety organization SAROC would hopefully solve the safety problems.
The winner of the first stage, "Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin Deceuninck) almost fell and I heard that many riders got into trouble. I don't think that should be allowed in the last half kilometer."
Jacobsen's preparation for the Tour de France seemed to be going well, with two stage wins and a second place in the five-day Baloise Belgian Tour.
The Dutch sprinter will be looking to repeat his stage win in this race. With two wins in Belgium and a polished sprint action, the Sudar-Quick-Step team has a good feeling about the race.
"We are happy with our performance here, but of course our goal is the Tour," Jacobsen told sporza.be.
"We all keep riding our bikes and our legs are getting better and better. So from now on it's important to stay healthy for the Grande Pearl."
Jacobsen's last race date before heading to Bilbao on July 1 will be the Dutch National Championships. Jacobsen warned, however, that Mathieu van der Pol (Alpecin Deceuninck), the overall winner of the Baloise Belgian Tour, is the big favorite for the following Saturday.
