Colima has expanded its road wheel lineup with the addition of two carbon fiber models to its MCC and WS road wheel lines. The new models, named MCC Evo and WS Evo, will be the brand's first tubeless-ready road wheels with hookless rims.
Until now, all handmade road wheels from the French manufacturer have been available as either tubular or clincher. Last year's release of the all-road wheelset Essentia introduced Colima's first hookless and tubeless wheels. However, with this new release and update, Colima will also be using this technology in its road wheels.
According to Colima, the new wheelsets will be available in hookless/tubeless or tubular, offering an unmatched stiffness-to-weight ratio. Colima also has a clear intention to continue to support tubular platforms for the foreseeable future, unlike many other wheel manufacturers who are moving away from tubular technology.
Both the MCC Evo and WS Evo wheelsets will be produced and offered in two rim depths, 32mm and 47mm. According to Colima, the 32mm version is suitable for alpine routes, while the 47mm is for all-around riding. Each EVO wheelset is said to be up to 145 grams lighter than the previous generation.
According to the brand, lateral stiffness tests show that the MCC Evo 47 has the best stiffness-to-weight ratio on the market, with an average of 15% stiffer than its competitors.
Says Hugo Poudrel, Product Category Manager at CORIMA: "When evaluating a wheel's performance, it is crucial to consider various factors such as aerodynamics, responsiveness, stiffness, and weight, as CORIMA's patented We are pleased that CORIMA's patented technology and approach to wheel design has allowed us to achieve a better ratio than any of our competitors. We can't wait to see riders around the world experience the performance and pure character of CORIMA's hand-built carbon wheels, MCC EVO and WS EVO, whether they are tubular or tubeless wheels.
The extreme looks of the 12-spoke MCC EVO were designed with full use of CORIMA's carbon fiber expertise. The MCC EVO is positioned alongside the MCC 32 and 47 in the brand's lineup.
The MCC EVO is available in tubeless/hookless as well as tubular versions, made of 100% carbon fiber and paired with 12 carbon spokes. The inner width of the rim is 21mm and the outer width is 26mm, not as wide as the Hunt 48 limitless wheels we recently reviewed. The wheel is also compatible with tire widths from 25 to 32 mm, but as is the case with some manufacturers, there is currently no approved tire list for this wheel; read also ERTRO's latest guidance on tire and rim combinations.
The WS EVO wheelset uses 20 carbon fiber spokes in an "R2" paired spoke pattern and is a bit less wild than the MCC EVO. They are said to be built to offer performance, precise handling, and versatility. The wheels are also handcrafted in France, and Colima claims they offer a unique, high-quality feel that matches their price point.
The WS EVO features the same 21mm inner width, 26mm outer width, and 32/47mm rim depth options as the higher-end MCC EVO.
Accompanying the wheels will be a new hub ratchet engagement system developed by Colima. The hub is equipped with a 36-tooth ratchet that provides a 10-degree engagement angle. This system is said to allow riders to get 17% faster engagement and transmission speed than the previous model.
The MCC EVO wheels use the Corima D2T ratchet hub, while the WS EVO wheels use the EVO S hub. Both models use the same updated ratchet.
In addition, a new Colima warranty is available to users who register their wheelset within one month of purchase, and the carbon rims now have a lifetime warranty. All other parts are guaranteed for two years. Crash replacement help is now available within three years of purchase. For more information, visit the Colima website.
